As they say, health is the new wealth and an increasingly substantial focus for travelers. Operators are looking future forward to meet guests where they want to be in terms of the facilitation of exercise while on property, be it in the hotel gym, in room, or outdoors. This takes keen fitness design and planning intention. Here are some considerations to keep in mind:

IN FACILITY: PRESERVE SPACE FOR MOVEMENT, INCLUDE DIGITAL GUIDANCE AND DEDICATE SPACE FOR RECOVERY

Functional Training and Recovery continue to be top trends in the fitness world. An approach built around facilitating popular training modalities with the versatility to shift and refresh is key.

First and foremost, hotel fitness facilities today must integrate ample open space for dynamic movement type exercise preference, including HIIT training, foam rolling, stretching, and the like to facilitate hotel guests expectations all the while keeping them safe. Loaded with all the right functional training tools and accessories and offering expansive training areas, the the Fairmont Kea Lani is a spectacular demonstration of the allocation of this balance of space.

In facility digital workout guidance has become a rapidly emerging trend and requirement. Now more than ever, strategic use and placement of digital guidance and equipment serve to balance the fitness space. Hospitality giant, Accor has partnered with FitnessDesignGroup to modernize participating properties to feature increased movement spaces, digitally guided exercise content, and a re-balanced fitness equipment selection.

IN ROOM: PLAN FOR INTEGRATION AND EFFICIENCY

Whether it’s the desire to seek out privacy or for the sheer convenience, many hotel guests wish to exercise within the space if allocated within their own rooms.

This trend well predates the quarantine guidelines of the COVID pandemic and will continue to be a strong influence on the future of hotel fitness amenities. In room fitness for the hotel guest translates into less prep before “hitting the gym” by eliminating considerations such as the need for makeup or the “right” apparel. Other concerns include the potential of running into co-workers, or in general a distaste for exercising in front of others.

Property operators who get out in front of this to develop and offer integrated, thoughtfully designed hotel room fitness solutions will most certainly win. FitnessDesignGroup worked with Hilton Hotels, beginning in 2017, to successfully launch Five Feet to Fitness. Hilton is a pioneer in the development of the Fitness Guest Room.

TAKE IT OUTSIDE

Outdoor training spaces can create strong value in any hotel based wellness offering. These outside playgrounds – if designed well – can facilitate endless modalities and allow for fresh air and spacing while remaining communal.

The message is clear – Operators must design smart and efficient options that offer guests an extraordinary exercise experience for guests – anywhere, any time.

This takes more thoughtful and careful planning than ever before. Engaging a functional fitness design specialist will help you integrate the authenticity and infrastructure you wish to extend.

The post Design Differently | FitnessDesignGroup first appeared on Fitness Design Group.]]>
To the untrained eye or individual, fitness space design and planning may tend to seem and look the same. But that notion can be very far from reality.

The differences lie within each step of the process, from the designer’s style to the ethos of the facility. And most importantly, the differences lie in the results.

What makes FitnessDesignGroup different from fitness equipment companies that offer more generalized layout services? The answer lies directly within the question itself. FDG is a full-service functional design firm, not simply a company that offers placement direction in support of one’s specific equipment. An important and fundamental difference in approach.

Whereas equipment companies are rightfully rooted in developing their products – FDG is rooted in the design development of our clients’ exercise spaces. This progression of experience development is essential to achieving differentiated outcomes, and what we do best. Our team is comprised of specialized architects and functional design consultants. This disciplined and professional approach leads to fresh results and sustainability in design.

Let’s take a deeper look …

What comes first?

Instead of an equipment-forward approach, FDG begins with the end-user requirement in mind. Before equipment can be placed, much less any specific brand of equipment, we must first assess the space through the lens of its opportunities and its limitations. How will the environment ultimately impact the end users’ expectations? Will it be inclusive? Will the offering appeal widely to the very constituency it seeks to serve? Will live or digital guidance lead the experience? Our process begins here, well before pen to paper.

We seek to understand spatial allocations and how energy zones work and flow. We take into consideration elements such as ceiling height, lighting, views, entryways, windows, pathways, and other space adjacencies. They are the building blocks for determining a sense of how people and energy will flow through the space.

Digging In

Equipping each zone with the requisite gear is certainly important. But first, what flooring materials and transitions will be necessary to support the wide variability in training types present in today’s modern gym? Naturally, this can vary greatly depending on the facility type, specialization, location, and the end users’ demands. This step takes careful and thoughtful planning and design reference to ensure both fluidity and function are met. Certainly, esthetics will begin to also play a role here in this very foundational element of setting the stage for exercise.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Conceptual renderings can help non-design professionals better assess and anticipate intended outcomes. They can serve both as a guiding light for design development as well as smart marketing assets for other stakeholders. Our photorealistic rendering process is tailored more specifically to gym design and development. One of the biggest challenges in impactful gym design revolves around the delineation of functional space requirements for human movement vs. that of the equipment footprint itself. An enhanced visualization process in 3D can create a sense of space well before it must be constructed.

This level of depth, visualization, and customization requires skilled designers with special training to effect energizing results.

Results Designed to Inspire

We work to deliver an elevated experience in exercise for every one of our clients, every time, throughout the entire process. Every project is a blank canvas, and as we set our design approach in motion, we infuse energy and engagement into space we touch. A perfect synthesis of function + aesthetics.

Perhaps our greatest inspiration in partnering with clients is to develop the next generation of highly sought-after exercise experiences. Bringing form and function in support of their vision is our calling.

Gym Design – Taking the Exercise Experience Beyond the Four Walls https://fitnessdesigngroup.com/gym-design-taking-the-exercise-experience-beyond-the-four-walls/ Tue, 01 Dec 2020 00:45:49 +0000 https://fitnessdesigngroup.com/?p=12247 To remain relevant, facility Operators will most certainly design environments that offer their guests and members safe and experiential workouts in facility. However, many will seize the opportunity to connect and extending that same workout experience outside of their four walls.

As we envision the next generation of exercise experiences, broadening access and location to physical activity is paramount.

People thrive on being part of a community, and gaining energy, guidance and support from others. For these reasons and more, fitness facilities will remain a destination and staple. The current prohibitive mandates and personal concerns for community health risk have driven many to exercise outside of the gym. Moving forward, how and where will we decide to get fit each day?

To remain relevant, facility Operators will most certainly design environments that offer their guests and members safe and experiential workouts in facility. However, many will seize the opportunity to connect and extending that same workout experience outside of their four walls.

Clearly this will all take a bit of technology to assist. Most critically, developing and honing an exercise experience that not only keeps your community intact, but will draw new members and remain aligned with your culture and brand will require a strong intention towards design.

What to Consider:

Exemplify Your Brand Culture and Extend Your Community

The success of any fitness facility is largely driven by its culture, people and brand. It’s the environment and the “feel,” flow, energy and vibe people get from that environment. Operators must not make the mistake of turning to short term solutions such as canned programming or home-made videos that fall below brand standards and can be wholly detrimental to the facility’s value proposition. Programming and execution must be designed as a fully integrated, branded approach.

Offer Robust, Results-Driven Workouts

Digital and virtual programming should reflect an extension of in-gym training.

It must remain energizing, engaging, and inviting. Modalities from high-intensity training to recovery based instruction should be included. The key is to design the program universally and for long-term sustainability so that your member or participant can facilitate their training regimen anywhere they are.

Offer Equipment Recommendations and Space Allocation for Home or Travel Equipment

Meeting exercise needs wherever members or guests may train is a great way to demonstrate a commitment to client wellbeing for facilities of all types. Offering a digital extension of your space, along with equipment and storage/space recommendations to support their out-of-gym training will go a long way. The easier you can make it, the stickier your offering becomes.

Operators in every sector have a unique opportunity going forward to extend their reach and brand.

This takes more thoughtful and careful planning than ever before. It involves rebuilding the future, not simply reacting to the present.

Engaging a functional fitness design specialist will help you integrate the authenticity and infrastructure you wish to extend.

(Santa Monica, CA, October 27, 2020) – Leading US based gym designers FitnessDesignGroup and world leading hospitality group Accor began collaborating on the future of fitness well before the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

Responding to the current environment, and taking cues from leading boutique fitness studios worldwide, a new hotel gym experience has emerged that exudes energy, inclusiveness, and enjoyment for wellness minded business and leisure travelers alike.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness tourism is travel associated with the pursuit of maintaining or enhancing one’s personal well-being. Pre-pandemic, research indicated the global wellness tourism industry would reach $919B by 2022.

With health top of mind more than ever before, travelers focused on wellness spend an estimated 178% more per trip than the average tourist. Over the last decade, hotels throughout the Accor network have placed greater emphasis on meeting the demands of increasingly wellness focused guests, and fitness centers remain an important focal point of that effort.

The intention: to create exercise spaces to rival the best fitness facilities around the globe.

To help Accor create increased continuity between its vast portfolio of fitness amenities, FitnessDesignGroup has set forth to modernize participating properties to feature increased movement spaces, digitally guided exercise content, and a rebalanced fitness equipment selection for leading brands in the Accor portfolio including Raffles, Fairmont, Sofitel, SO/, and Pullman.

The outcome: a design driven approach built around the growing demand for functional training-based modalities including HiiT Training, Power Yoga, Boxing, and other popular genres intended to refresh over time. The initiative will extend its reach beyond North America making its European debut at one of Accor’s flagship properties in France, Pullman Paris Montparnasse, in 2021.

Further details include fitness flooring transitions visibly designed to delineate training zones from higher intensity workouts to active recovery sessions. Enhanced spacing considerations and hygiene integration complement a balance of leading fitness equipment brands including Aktiv Solutions, Gym Rax, Core Health & Fitness, Technogym, Hyperice, and Les Mills.

Accor and fitness design group partner together for fitness design in hospitality gym spaces

“At Accor our well-being initiatives are designed to permeate into every aspect of the guest experience. Staying fit is an increasingly substantial focus for travelers today and our approach is to elevate the offering beyond what our guests might otherwise enjoy in their gym or fitness routine at home” says Emlyn Brown, Global Vice President, Wellbeing, Luxury & Premium Brands, Accor.

Said Brown, “The best fitness facilities around the world provide a combination of instruction and energy that you can feel instantly upon entry. Stylization of space and a more thoughtful balance of fitness equipment and apparatus is often overlooked in hotel-based gym amenities.”

“For many, the health club or boutique fitness studio experience has become a key part of their daily lifestyles. Despite the current interruption to so many aspects of our daily lives, humans are eager to return to the best of communal gym environments outside the confines of their homes. Accor has been steadfast in maintaining a focus on reconnection to their spaces, and health and wellness remains top of the list in terms of what guests expect as they head back out into the world,” said Lauren Holle, Director of Design for FitnessDesignGroup.

With the introduction of Pullman Power Fitness, future Pullman properties will feature a signature functional training environment that includes digital fitness guided programming, tailored fitness equipment, and rigging and floor coverings that together foster guidance, socialization, and safety. The space is designed to deliver a higher touch, results driven workout experience that is unrivaled in the hospitality space.

“We’ve set out to create gym spaces that will make it not just easy, but exciting for our guests to stay on track with their health and wellbeing plan. We want our guests to look forward to future stays at our hotels and are happy to be raising the bar in terms of the hotel gym experience in partnership with FitnessDesignGroup.” said Brown.

Home Gym Design – the Value of Smart Gym Planning https://fitnessdesigngroup.com/home-gym-design-the-value-of-smart-gym-planning/ Thu, 15 Oct 2020 22:15:07 +0000 https://fitnessdesigngroup.com/?p=11911 When it comes to home gym design, gym planning and fitness design are key.

The post Home Gym Design – the Value of Smart Gym Planning first appeared on Fitness Design Group.]]>
In designing a great home gym, the problem to solve is not in finding exercise equipment, but rather in creating functional space. Just as with your kitchen, there are no shortages of appliances. How those appliances come together to accommodate the wide range of choices within the confines of more limited space is the value of smart gym planning and design.

Foundationally, Fitness Design Group focuses on reverse engineering the environment around how our clients and their families want to train and move in the space. This begins with recognizing the footprint.

Here are a few additional considerations to keep in mind, accompanied by examples.

Employ Aesthetic Fundamentals to your Space

home gym should never appear sterile or static. It’s important to integrate functional fitness equipment and the aesthetic fundamentals of interior design during in your planning for optimal motivation. Consider for the designated fitness area or room conversion the following: lighting, wall colors, gym floor coverings and other environmental embellishments for an inspirational and aesthetically pleasing space that compliments your home.

This residential loft serves to support the family’s vision for their exercise space to be most accessible and supported by the adjacent lounging area.

Design for How the Gym Space Will Be Used

Designing for how you will exercise at home in your dedicated space is critical. Again, the area needs to accommodate trending exercise training modalities, and at the same time, be flexible enough to adapt as your workout needs shift. What’s critical is to determine who in the family will utilize the fitness space today and over time. We work with many households where children are training for specific sports and require accommodations that otherwise may not be needed for their parents’ style of workouts. The beauty of creating exercise spaces within the home allows for a more specialized environment to be had.

This dedicated home gym supports an entire family with diverse training requirements. Kids sports specific training, Indoor Cycling, and CrossFit style functional training are all accounted for.

Gym Storage is a Must!

Smart storage is a critical and often overlooked component of a great home gym. Planning for home gym storage that looks as good as it works in organizing your fitness space should begin even before you select your fitness equipment. There are great choices today including storage only solutions or those that will integrate pull up bars or anchor points for various equipment.

Smart use of gym storage is beautifully illustrated in this Chicago High Rise.

The post Sumptuous Home Gyms Are The Latest Design Luxury Amid Covid-19 first appeared on Fitness Design Group.]]>
Featured on Forbes.com – September 18, 2020 | Contributor: Emma Reynolds

The Covid-19 pandemic has forced us to shift how we interact with the world, from shopping at the grocery store to spending time with family and friends to the establishments we frequent, be it a restaurant or a gym. The world is starting to open but with no vaccine and public regulations still in place, like wearing a mask, social distancing and reducing indoor capacity, it’s unsettling for most to dive back into daily life. This includes exercising at the once-beloved indoor gym.

As offices remain closed and many schools are shut in lieu of virtual learning, we’re spending more time than ever in our homes. Home workouts via fitness apps, YouTube videos or virtual subscriptions are skyrocketing but many aren’t used to working out at home. Where to begin? For the luxury market, the answer is creating a gym from scratch or transforming an existing room into a workout haven. A home gym is a wonderful investment to stay fit and healthy during these unprecedented times.

Whether it’s a Fifth Avenue penthouse or a sprawling California estate, FitnessDesignGroup (FDG), founded in 2005, has options that make a gym a natural part of a home’s design. The Los Angeles-based firm has designed gyms in multiple office locations for Apple, Nike, Starbucks, Snapchat, Google and the Los Angeles Lakers and has created fitness centers and tailored in-room fitness amenities for hotel corporations including Hilton and Accor. The company is seeing an immense increase in inquiries for residential projects all over the U.S.

Forbes Magazine design home gym with Fitness Design Group Technogym sauna gym floorWorking across the world, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco are the largest markets, with many requesting gyms for their second homes in Idaho or Montana. Historically, the bulk of FDG’s residential business comes from new homes but since the Covid-19 pandemic struck, it’s been a lot of conversions.

“Although the trend towards identifying more intentional and dedicated space for exercise at home has been steadily increasing for years, during Covid-19, consumers have widely clamored to buy up small accessories and any dumbbell or kettlebell they can find,” says Bryan Green, founder and CEO of FitnessDesignGroup. “However, more thoughtfully, we’ve experienced a massive uptick in clients who are interested in taking a holistic approach to creating permanent wellness space within their homes. Our home gym design division has been inundated with helping plan a next generation of really special spaces.”

Technology takes center stage in this “next generation” of home gyms, whether someone enjoys watching a show or the news while on a treadmill, playing music or following along to an online workout.

Forbes Magazine on Home Gym Design spaces with Bryan Green and Fitness Design Group

“The overwhelming majority of content distribution right now is being played through YouTube and through Zoom and other sources where people are utilizing their own devices and then looking to integrate those in or around in proximity to where they’re training,” Green says. “We’re putting in smart TVs, which are web-enabled, and we’re doing a lot of that integration into these wall systems.”

In terms of design, Green says that people want a gym that fits in with the rest of their homes. While some may like the black, rubber flooring found in more commercial gyms and health clubs, many want a chic space that incorporates materials used in the rest of their house. He says: “We have a myriad of colors and options to work with today that can really open up the space, both functionality and aesthetically,” he says. “As a general rule, people like light, bright, energy-stimulating palettes that make for an uplifting space for fitness.”

HIIT workouts, yoga or boxing require open space for movement, and many want to open up the interior of the space and put the machines and equipment along the perimeter. They can accommodate any type of gym, including training equipment for a specific sport if necessary. While equipment depends on the client’s budget and workout preferences, FDG installs every type of equipment, like Peloton, Mirror, Technogym, Hyperice or Gym Rax. The pandemic has clearly forced us all to consider our health and wellness levels in a way that we have not before. Reports and writings such as this recent Forbes article all indicate that more people are looking to get, and stay active. This is a terrific shift for the fitness industry.

The question is where and how will people do this. In their homes? Outside? In the gym?

The answer is all of the above. In the end, people simply want an energizing and safe space to train the body and mind each day.

Designing a Home Gym is certainly a valid option that many are embracing. A home gym that’s well planned and designed to facilitate multiple modalities offers convenience and safety.

But people thrive on the energy of others. On being part of a community. On friendly competition. On being in the presence of other humans. Fitness facilities are the ultimate environment for this interaction and engagement, and people will always be drawn to that.

To that end, clubs and studios and facilities must now reimagine how we deliver extraordinary exercise experiences within the environment we are in. This is an incredible opportunity, and those that do it right, will flourish.

As we build the next generation of exercise spaces that remain energizing, engaging, and inviting, they must ultimately become more purpose driven. Ease of use and understanding are critical. Modalities from intensity to recovery must be addressed. This takes more thoughtful and careful planning than ever before. It involves rebuilding the future, not simply reacting to the present.

When creating a home gym, one thing that often gets overlooked or not thoroughly considered is the flooring. This could – and probably will – result in scuffed, scratched and marred flooring, damaged equipment or much worse – injury.

Likely the flooring in your space is concrete, wood, tile or carpeting. These surfaces don’t support traction, shock absorption or stability. Further, they won’t facilitate cleanliness or sound absorption, and they certainly won’t stand up to equipment use over time. And there are also aesthetics to consider.

Lay the groundwork to fully support your home gym when you are in the designing stage, and you’ll get better workouts while saving yourself from injury, and lots of other issues.

Here are the top five factors to consider when choosing your Home Gym Flooring

What type of activity will you do and what are your space requirements?

If you are into cardio training such as plyometrics or jumping rope, or with the use of a treadmill or heavy equipment, you’ll want to look for durable flooring that absorbs shock and offers support. Rubber is a good place to start. Rubber is also a good option for strength training, as it will support weights or equipment if dropped. Consider exactly how the space will be used and do your research to ensure the flooring well supports it.

What are your space and usage requirements?

If you have a small space, or think you may want to relocate or adjust your training space at some point, interlocking tiles are a great option. Portable and easy to install, simply lock the tiles together in your workout space and you’re ready to go. There are some great durable and affordable options on the market.

Cleanliness and odor prevention

A consideration for every home gym is how well it cleans up and prevents odors from building. Virgin rubber and recycled rubber are terrific options. With virgin rubber, there is no unpleasant “used tire smell” frequently associated with low-grade rubber floors. The closed cell construction of virgin rubber does not allow dirt or moisture to penetrate the surface of the tile, allowing for easy clean up.

Acoustics and Sound Vibration

The last thing you want is a dream home gym that fills the house with clanking and pounding. Look for gym flooring that absorbs sound!

Aesthetics

Depending on where it’s located in your home, you’ll likely want your home gym to “fit in” with the aesthetics and color scheme of your home. A black floor may not be what you have in mind. Fortunately there are many color and texture options to choose from that are affordable and won’t disrupt the visual appeal of your space and home. Surfaces can appear like stone or wood, but still perform with the functionality and acoustic properties of rubber.

Designing your home gym with these considerations in mind for use now, and into the future is a solid approach. You may also want to consider a home gym design consultation. For more information contact one of our design specialists today.

It’s official, the rush is on as more and more people are creating home gyms these days to facilitate flexibility of schedules, access to exercise, and investing more deeply in the health of their families. And contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend a fortune to do it, but that’s where some careful planning and gym design matter most.

There are a few key considerations one must address when designing your home gym.

Employ Aesthetic Fundamentals to your Space

A home gym should never appear sterile or static. it’s important to integrate functional fitness equipment and the aesthetic fundamentals of interior design during in your planning for optimal motivation. Consider for the designated area or room conversion the following: lighting, wall colors, floor coverings and other environmental embellishments for an inspirational and aesthetically pleasing space that compliments your home. Consider how your home gym space will evolve and change as your exercise preferences may grow or modify over time.

Spatial Accommodation

Designing for how you will exercise at home in your dedicated space is critical. Again, the area needs to accommodate trending training modalities, and at the same time, be flexible enough to adapt as your workout needs shift.

Considerations such as the balance between cardio, strength training equipment, and functional training tools is key, and possibly even incorporating a space that facilitates meditation, stretching, yoga and recovery should be taken into account.

Storage

Smart storage is a critical and often overlooked component of a great home gym. Planning for storage that will looks as good as it works in organizing your space should begin even before you select your equipment. There are great choices today including storage only solutions or those that will integrate pull up bars or anchor points for various equipment.

Fitness Specific Flooring

A home gym needs to include fitness flooring that absorbs shock, is easy to clean and muffles sound. Again, you don’t have to spend a lot… even basic spot matting can often be enough to support the space.

Equipment Selection

Once the physical limitations and usage requirement of the space have been well accounted for, the next step is to select the most appropriate home gym equipment and accessories. Space constraints can place some unavoidable challenges, but there are often creative design solutions and alternative options that can be employed when working with a skilled Functional Design Specialist.

With careful planning and design, your home gym can offer you and your family a great exercise environment that’s convenient and enjoyable.
